Future advances in support services to the mid-market

Publication date: April 2010

Mid-sized organisations face the persistent challenge of sizing up the benefits versus the drawbacks of working with large, global IT services organisations.

The bottom line for many is that they are concerned they will simply be too small to be important enough to the vendor. Couple this with the desire of many smaller mid-sized firms to work with providers who are locally based, and the business prospects for mid-sized and mid-market focused suppliers look strong.

Except, it’s not that simple. Yes, these smaller suppliers are well positioned, but:

  • Can they deliver the right level of technology and delivery capability?
  • Are they able to market their capabilities effectively?
  • Will they ever really successfully compete with the threat from the ‘big boys’, who have heavy-weight sales channels and, by comparison, enormous marketing budgets?

These are some of the key themes this report explores. We have chosen to focus in on support services specifically (e.g. managed services, software and hardware maintenance, field services) as this is where many large and mid-sized suppliers cross swords.
