With the growth of outsourcing and cloud computing, the delivery and management of technology is gradually moving out of the internal IT department. IT in the sense of managing technology infrastructure is edging closer to becoming a critical but nonstrategic asset like electricity, best provided by specialised external managed services providers.

If your organisation views the CIO’s role as management of the technology infrastructure, then the CIO’s role is clearly endangered. Within the next decade technology infrastructure management will become just another operational requirement sitting alongside telecoms and facilities management. In order for your organisation to develop an intelligent strategy, it is important to begin to think through this change. It is also vitally important for CIOs to consider career development over the next few years in order to be in a position to capitalise on their expertise as the IT industry morphs into a different shape.

A growing minority of CIOs are already responsible for corporate functions beyond IT such as facilities management, daily operations, and customer service. Whether recognised in organisational management charts or not, CIOs and IT Heads are increasingly expected to help attract, retain and grow customer relationships, improve the effectiveness of the workforce and enable entry into new markets and/or provision of new products and services.
