The role of the IT department has for the past number of years been largely centred around serving considerable numbers of staff through enterprise desktop services – where the emphasis is on standardisation and reducing total cost of ownership.

However, within a relatively short space of time a number of rapidly evolving trends have emerged, which are putting new demands on the IT department and challenging the established approach.

This report explores some of the key drivers that are changing the shape of the digital workplace. The findings of this report have resulted in a number of key messages:

  • In half of all workplaces the successful use of IT lies beyond the IT department and its technology suppliers
  • Better profiling of job roles required
  • More metrics around staff satisfaction with technology tooling required
  • Desktop virtualisation is a must
  • IT needs to collaborate with HR and marketing to create social media policies
  • Presenteeism needs to be better managed
